Office 2010 and SharePoint 2007

After installing Office 2010 on my computer (both laptop and desktop) running Windows 7 RTM, I had a problem opening any Office files stored in our SharePoint 2007 environment.  I would click on a file to open it or edit it, the Office 2010 application would open, however, the file wouldn’t open.

I could download the document to my desktop, open it, edit it, and re-uploaded it, but this fare far from ideal.  I could link the site to Colligo, but I don’t want to have connect to a site every time I want to open a document.

Finally, today I ran across this helpful string of comments on the TechNet forum - http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/office2010general/thread/230fc30a-8922-4c75-a8fc-540b0282dff8

In short, the solution is to make a fake proxy in IE:

  1. Open up Internet Explorer
  2. Click Tools –> Internet Options
  3. Click the Connections tab
  4. Click LAN settings
  5. Check “Use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up or VPN connections).”
  6. Enter 127.0.0.1 for the address
  7. Click Advanced
  8. In the Exceptions type: *.*
  9. Click OK, OK and OK

You should now be able to browse to a SharePoint site, click an Office document and have it successfully open in your Office 2010 client.  This successfully worked for me with MOSS and reports in the TechNet forum are that it works with WSSv3 as well.

For those of you still having problems with this are you up to date with the patches and hot fixes for your products?  Recently a few of you have commented that this hasn't worked for you.  Unfortunately I don't have another solution to try.  I had to use this method when I first started using Office 2010, but honestly haven't had to apply these changes at all within the last year in order for this to work.

If I was you I would make sure all my software is up to date.  You could also maybe uninstall/reinstall Office and see if that clears up the issue.

Thanks... didnt work!  But since it worked for others, it must be a useful post.  I have tried a few things with no success, story of my life.

this didn't seem to work for me; my workaround has been to right-click the sharepoint document link (instead of left-clicking to open normally) and choosing "open in new window", that seems to work for some reason. It's a bit annoying, however.

    Joe,
What version (or release) of Office 2010 are you running?  Assuming your Office 2010 installation as well as your SharePoint 2007 installation are up today, this should no longer be a problem and the fix above shouldn't be required.  I have been on Windows 7, Office 2010 and stayed up-to-date with both and haven't had any of these problems accessing file in SharePoint 2007 for quite a while now.

For me with OFfice 2010, I can open and edit documents in IE, but from Firefox I can only open in read only.

    Office 2010 and SharePoint 2007

I am currently using Office 2010, Windows 7 and SharePoint 2007 Standard and I haven't had any problems since the release.  I have set my IE settings back to their normal settings and everything has been working fine for me.  I'm using Windows 7 and not Vista SP2, so there could be an issue there that I am not aware of.  So, as far as having suggestions or other work arounds, unfortunately I really don't have any except to check and make sure your IE settings are set to their default settings. It should all work (without the work around) using the release version of Office 2010 based on my experience.

    Office 2010 and SharePoint 2007

This did not work for me in the release of office 2010.  No idea how microsoft could release a product that doesn't even work with it's own products.

    any other suggestions?
