Moving SharePoint Databases to a new SQL Server – Part 5
Well, after my 4 part post on all the manual work to move the SharePoint SQL databases to a new server, I found a post from Gary Lapointe, a Microsoft MVP, in a forum today about moving the databases he said:
"This is somewhat of a hack but it's worked really well for me - use the sql client tools to set up an alias for the database server and set it to point to your new server - then simply move the databases to that server.  This would mean that you wouldn't have to change any settings within sharepoint and the whole process can be done in just a few minutes (just detach the databases, move them to the new server and attach). "
I haven't tried this myself yet, but you can be I'm going to after all the work and headaches from my last attempted move. I'll keep you posted on how it works….

Moving SharePoint Databases to a new SQL Server – Part 5

As embarrassing is to admit, I never got around to try things :( Short after I posed this series I switch jobs, and with the move the environment I was working on all of this in stayed with my old job.  I really need to get in and try this, but just haven't had the time.  Since this post there have been quite a few more about moving databases and using stsadm -o renameserver to do it.  You can see this article on TechNet for instructions from Microsoft on how they say to do it. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc512725.aspx

I'll try to give this a try and let you know how it works.
